This project began as an exploration of the built structure and those meanings we place upon it. How does a house become a home? How do we place meaning upon built structures? And what associations can a house carry to those living in it or those looking in from the outside?
The series is also about being an outsider - we are outsiders to the houses and to the lives of those people who live near us, sometimes, even, outsiders to the houses we ourselves inhabit, and our own lives. In painting these houses I took away the setting of, and landscaping around them. I replaced these with a stark horizon. The houses, places themselves, become placeless, unconnected, un-rooted structures, separated from the land.
I started this project in 2016, near the time that Trump was elected, a time when my personal America was falling apart. In a very complicated way, this project came to represent my personal America - disconnected, in many ways unknown, sometimes falling apart, but still something beautiful.
